From Dolly Howe
On May 22, 2014 my friend, soul mate, eternal companion and partner in life left this material world for a “place that is not on any map.” After more than three years of fighting a losing battle against that dreaded “C” disease, Stephen slipped quietly away. For more than 40 years Stephen had been my friend and confidant. During this process, I find that he had been a special friend and confident to many others. He was truly a special individual. His wish was to leave this world with dignity and humor which he accomplished admirably.
Being the compulsive individual that he was, Stephen left nothing to chance. Although he was in the midst of his struggle, he wrote his own final obituary which follows:
“Don’t cry because it’s over, Smile because it happened.” Dr. Suess
I died today, but I don’t think I left anything unpacked for the trip. After a lifetime of opportunity to learn and experience, I make a grateful departure, knowing that this journey takes you to a place that is not on any map. What I have seen, experienced, loved, laughed with and mourned over completes my life here on earth and my next emprise already waits in greeting.
I arrived here uncovered, and plan returning in much the same condition, with the exception of three memories very near and dear to my heart; my military service, my Phi Beta Kappa membership, and my soul mate and eternal companion, Dolly. To all the rest, thank you and God bless.
In lieu of flowers, plant one of your favorite perennials or perform a random act of kindness.
Stephen
As per Steve’s instructions, there will be no services; his ashes are to be scattered by a trout stream near the Utah Strawberry Reservoir and in the Pacific Ocean.

Steve was a great guy. He and I also did things in business later after college. He will be missed. Charlie English
